Drum Corps and Marching Band. Worth it?

nickyplaysflute:

vespertine-formations:

This is my humble opinion on the negative attitudes towards Marching Band and Drum Corps in the world of music education. Much of this is based off of my personal experiences and research as a general music student and as Music Education Major. Most of what is written is opinion-based, and I accept that there are just reasons and opinions outside my own that deserve equal respect.

wonderful opinion on this!!

Pretty good thoughts in here.

I’m not a fan of programs that are centrally structured around the marching band—as in, the marching band is the centerpiece, and everything else is an offshoot from it. Music is so much more than a competition or a prize/rating.

But there’s no reason to hate on marching band either. Like the OP said, there’s a ton of lessons it teaches and values it imparts that are just as important. And it is music. There’s no reason a marching band can’t be musical as well as visual. Just like there’s no reason a concert ensemble can’t inspire the same motivation and self-discipline that marching band often brings, if done right.

Long story short: I think they’re both important parts of any band/music program.

Alzheimer's Patient "Awakens" When Listening to Music From His Past

infoneer-pulse:

To watch Henry—an elderly man who has spent over ten years in a nursing home, barely able to answer yes or no questions—come alive when listening to music from his past is a reminder of the powerful, inspiring, and affecting power of music.

A new documentary, Alive Inside, follows the “awakening” that occurs when people suffering from memory loss and Alzheimer’s are given music they have a strong emotional connection to — often, music they grew up with. In the clip, Henry is barely responsive before one of his caretakers puts headphones on him and starts up one of his favorite tunes. Almost instantly, we see Henry swaying from side to side and singing, his eyes wide open.

What’s your favorite melody?

We’ve discussing our favorite melodies in my college choir recently, and it’s been interesting to see the responses that range from Brahms piano concertos to melodies from Toy Story!

I think everyone has a melody that’s stuck with them and will probably always stay around.

What’s yours?

Yep.

I’ve actually done all of these… minus the abacus :P Not that I wouldn’t have tried if I owned one.

Rare Music Typewriter

from jacksredbarn

Want!  We just need this and one of those chromatic typewriters and we’ll be the coolest kids on the block…typewriter-wise.

I’d love to have one of these, just for the novelty of it. I can’t ever see myself seriously using one :P

Okay, Music Majors. You win this one.

I think I most appreciate that the fermata, or as every middle school band teacher says, “bird’s eye, is the actual bird’s eye.

Another fantastic piece about Venezuela’s El Sistema by the fantastic team at the New York Times Video team.

I love El Sistema. I didn’t learn about it until last semester.

I doubt a program like this could be replicated on the national level here like they’ve done in Venezuela. But I often wonder if something like this could happen on a state or even regional level between states, and the grow even more…

Singing therapy helps patients speak again

musotherapic:

The recovery of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is an inspirational story. Through a technique called music therapy, she slowly began to unlock words and speak again. The music was a mechanism to find words she otherwise struggled to speak.
