Typical Childhood Conversations with Adults
Not related to teaching per se, but one of the things that has helped me when working with youth in Scouting is just listening to them. A lot of people don’t have the patience to listen to a 12 year old tell a rambling story that probably doesn’t have a punch line. But I can remember what it was like being twelve and having people who actually listened to you and took you seriously - it really boosts your confidence. So I try to listen and take the kids seriously.
The difficult part will be transferring that to a classroom, where suddenly there’s a quicker agenda and a less malleable schedule. But I think talking with students on the level you expect of them is another way to not only respect them but challenge them to rise up.
Plus it does get old hearing “how does it feel to be a teenager?” :P
