Contracts may improve student grades says research →
“A novel study finds that contracts and a new method of assessment can be successful used in the classroom.
Researchers discovered that when students design their own course, based on a contract, students scored higher grades and displayed better student satisfaction than on traditional points-based courses.
The research has been published in SAGE Open.”
Note, however, that the sample size was 40 college freshmen. I don’t think that is enough to overhaul everything, but certainly enough to warrant more research in this area.
I think there should be space for student lead learning in the classroom. It’s one of the trickier aspects to incorporate into a music classroom at first blush, but there are a lot of mini ways that one can engage the students and let them take charge for a moment.
But this sounds exciting - actually letting them direct the direction and focus of the course while providing responsibility. I hope they keep pursuing this vein of thought, just to see what happens.
