Teachers in Tiaras: When to Tattle →
teachersintiaras:
I’m sure many of you wonderful teachers out there can side with me that tattling is a problem, especially in the EC classroom. My mentor did something simply amazing in order to nip all of the tattles in the bud. She posted a huge laminated poster of when to tattle titled “The Tattling Rules.”

THIS IS EXCELLENT! Definitely warrants the use of all caps there!

I read online news articles because they’re free and easy to access. My local paper has a variety of articles online every day, and sometimes when I’m done reading an article, I scroll down to look at the comments.
When I get to the education articles, I see a few things in the comments:
1. An…

…but I am currently trying to figure out how to respond to an apparent future educator who believes that depression is not a mental illness, that it is alright to condemn suicide, and that one can overcome not only severe depression but also “severe mental retardation” if one wants to badly enough…
Really? There are people out there who believe things like this? :(
Well, I...

Anyone else love going to their practicums but hate going to their college classes? Definitely feeling it this morning…
Makes me wonder how I’ll approach that someday from the other way around - if I’m excited about teaching a class but student’s aren’t excited to be there, how do I motivate them so they share my enthusiasm?
See, if I’m being apathetic today,...

This is on my mind tonight:
ohmuffins:
I believe in education.
I believe in teachers.
I believe in teachers who are passionate and loving.
I believe in teachers who do their best every day.
I believe in a staff that supports their teachers.
I believe in a community that supports their teachers.
I believe in parents who support their children and teachers.
I do NOT believe in individuals who try and stand in the way...

Let’s assume:
Large course with at least 100 students
Primarily taught via lecture
Stadium-style seating
College-level course
And you can offer more than one idea
Let go of the powerpoint. Please. I know powerpoint is a handy way of organizing information… but I see too many lecture classes where they either (1) read right from the...

'My Teacher Is a Lesbian': Coming Out at School →

A month into my first year of teaching seventh graders in Oakland, Calif., we were in the school library, using the big tables there to spread out as we outlined Africa on poster paper and added geographical features. My students chatted as they worked.
“Are you married, Ms. Sokolower?” one of them asked me. My stomach instantly tied in a knot. I was a brand-new teacher in what...

Being around all of these amazing choral educators and great choirs is just inspiring. I wish I could really capture this all in words, but I don’t think it’s possible.
But I saw a boys choir from the Czech Republic tonight. And if I get the chance to work with kids even half as in love with music as those boys clearly were, I’ll die happy.
It’s a great reminder of what...

If any of my followers are attending the North Central Division American Choral Director’s Association Convention, look for the incredibly tall brown haired guy in the back row on the right side (from the audience’s perspective) on the opening choir of the opening concert.
That is to say, maybe you’ll see me there!
The choir I’m in is lucky enough to be performing at the...
