This is on my mind tonight:

I believe in education.
I believe in teachers.
I believe in teachers who are passionate and loving.
I believe in teachers who do their best every day.
I believe in a staff that supports their teachers.
I believe in a community that supports their teachers.
I believe in parents who support their children and teachers.
I do NOT believe in individuals who try and stand in the way...

Let go of the powerpoint. Please. I know powerpoint is a handy way of organizing information… but I see too many lecture classes where they either (1) read right from the...

'My Teacher Is a Lesbian': Coming Out at School →
lhuddles:
A month into my first year of teaching seventh graders in Oakland, Calif., we were in the school library, using the big tables there to spread out as we outlined Africa on poster paper and added geographical features. My students chatted as they worked.
“Are you married, Ms. Sokolower?” one of them asked me. My stomach instantly tied in a knot. I was a brand-new teacher in what...

Being around all of these amazing choral educators and great choirs is just inspiring. I wish I could really capture this all in words, but I don’t think it’s possible.
But I saw a boys choir from the Czech Republic tonight. And if I get the chance to work with kids even half as in love with music as those boys clearly were, I’ll die happy.
It’s a great reminder of what...

If any of my followers are attending the North Central Division American Choral Director’s Association Convention, look for the incredibly tall brown haired guy in the back row on the right side (from the audience’s perspective) on the opening choir of the opening concert.
That is to say, maybe you’ll see me there!
The choir I’m in is lucky enough to be performing at the...

iTunes gift card... help?
My family gave me a $25 iTunes gift card this past weekend! The only problem is… I have no idea what to spend it on :P I guess when faced with the entire iTunes library I sort of blank.
Anyone have any suggestions? I remember seeing people post their playlists a while back, so I know ya’ll have pretty good taste in music ;) Any favorite songs/bands I should be checking out before making a...

Teachers criticized for displaying ally cards →
gaywrites:
Two teachers in Canada have stirred controversy among parents for displaying cards stating that they are allies for LGBTQ students.
Stephanie Fortier and Peter Wohlgemut are fifth-grade teachers who have received special training on sexual orientation and gender identity. As a result they are encouraged to display “ally” cards in their classrooms. The cards read: “As an Ally, I...

Just as a student, I find I get more work done any place but my dorm room. I have a feeling I’ll be one of those people who will learn to stay extra, just to make sure everything gets done.

From the session “Maximizing Rehearsal Time”

Warming up is essential to the rehearsal time. It is a time to settle the ears and ‘rediscover’ the tone quality for the day. A standard for tone may be such that you work to get students to have a clear and steady sense of…

Contracts may improve student grades says research →
“A novel study finds that contracts and a new method of assessment can be successful used in the classroom.
Researchers discovered that when students design their own course, based on a contract, students scored higher grades and displayed better student satisfaction than on traditional points-based courses.
The research has been published in SAGE Open.”
Note, however, that the sample size...

wordforletter replied to your post: Things I miss: teaching. No practicum this…
I just started Doctor Who too! (The new reboot, anyhow.) I’m now on season 2. It does play with your emotions, though - I’m always torn between watching because I like it, and knowing I’m going to cry sometime during the episode.
My feelings exactly! Honestly, I’ve never had a show affect me so much...

Things I miss: teaching. No practicum this semester is kind of sad. I miss getting to be with students.
On the plus side - having all general eds this semester (finished with my major courses) makes me feel like I’m back in high school: class all morning, and then choir in the afternoon. And I’m okay with that.
Still trying to keep up with this dashboard though! Even if I’m not...
